Important information
A graduate in Fine Art from the Glasgow School of Art, Katie Litton has enjoyed a wide-ranging career encompassing interior design, set design and prop-making for television. Her passion for painting was rekindled when she moved from London, with her family, to the stunning surroundings and more relaxed lifestyle of the Isle of Arran. She is inspired by the simple beauty of the flora and fauna of the island.
The pace of life on Arran, in great contrast to that of London, allows her to internalise and enables her to absorb the ever-changing colours of the of the dramatic landscape, secluded from urban life, that is highlighted in her work. Litton finds inspiration in her new surroundings, where there is beauty in the detail and the mystery of the mundane.
She is attracted by the rhythms of nature’s soft curves and patterns, reflecting its beauty and the unknown darkness beyond it. She is particularly drawn to the symbolism of capturing the beauty hidden within berries in the dark winter months – often a feature in her work.
Inspired by the love of Flemish masters use of candlelight, Litton successfully explores the contrast of the dark and light tones; giving life and flow to form and composition, which is informed by her strong designer background.
