Robert Ryan is a contemporary Scottish artist born in Glasgow in 1956. He trained in metalwork and stained glass artist and worked doing mirror design for 15 years before moving to Oceania. Between 2006 and 2009, Ryan lived and travelled around Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand, where he developed his current unique technique while experimenting on special effects for films and inspired by the extraordinary quality and light of the environment.
Robert now lives and works from Glasgow and his current bespoke reverse paintings are achieved by applying layers of mixed media onto glass, including materials such as metal, crushed shell and gemstones. The work is full of movement with a three-dimensional quality to it, inviting the viewer to actively engage with the paintings.
